“Instead of the Moon”
Inspiration piece provided to Alexis Katchuk

17 Year Cicadas, June 2004
By Alexis Katchuk

We burned the dead at night.
Swept the carcasses into aluminum
garbage cans.  The ignition, kerosene and a match,
the multitude enough to hold the flames.
There was no smell of flesh,
but a satisfying crack of fragmenting shells.
Keeping watch, we left
when their soft eyes turned to ash.
